5 Considerations When Choosing an Interior Design Firm in Singapore

post feat8

When it comes to choosing an interior design firm in Singapore, picking the right one to handle your home renovation may seem like a daunting task. But it doesn’t have to be that way! The crucial factor here is conducting thorough research. To make your search easier, we outlined the main considerations to keep in mind. As we are an ID firm ourselves, we can’t help but want to shout, “Choose us!” but we understand that each and every project and client is unique, and it’s important, ultimately, to find the perfect fit for your specific needs and preferences.

1. The interior design firm’s portfolio

Now, the first thing that usually catches your attention when searching for an interior designer is their portfolio. Take the time to carefully review their past projects. Evaluate their style to see if it fits in with the design aesthetic you’re looking for. See if they have any experience working with the specific style similar to what you want. Where possible, request to see any finished projects to assess their quality of work. This will give you a good idea of their capabilities as an interior design firm.

At Yang’s Inspiration Design, we have successfully completed a diverse range of projects in various designs, including the ever-popular Muji style and the more rustic modern farmhouse. Take a look at our portfolio through our website or visit our social media pages for more inspiration.

2. The interior design firm’s accreditation

Looking at what accreditation the interior design firm has is another consideration to keep in mind. It can provide insight into the firm’s reliability and trustworthiness, which is especially crucial in light of the increasing number of renovation scams in Singapore. Having these accreditations can offer you peace of mind.

If you’re planning to renovate your HDB flat, make sure the firm you choose is approved by HDB. To be an HDB-licensed renovation company, a firm must meet certain criteria, such as having at least 3 years of experience in renovation works, being registered with ACRA for at least a year with a good track record.

Another accreditation to consider is the joint CaseTrust-RCMA accreditation for renovation companies. Firms with this accreditation have undergone a rigorous audit process, which ensures transparency in their costs and requires them to submit a deposit. This deposit will be forfeited if they fail to fulfil the contract terms or if they cease operations due to bankruptcy or other reasons.

Finally, bizSAFE accreditation is also worth looking out for as it indicates a company’s commitment to workplace safety and health. This nationally recognised programme helps companies enhance their safety capabilities.

Yang’s Inspiration Design is an HDB-licensed firm and we are CaseTrust-RCMA accredited. We have also attained a bizSAFE Level 3 status.

3. The interior design firm’s reviews

Read reviews online of the interior design firm to get a better understanding of their professionalism and client satisfaction. When reading reviews, don’t just rely on a single source. Get from multiple platforms like Google, forums, Facebook reviews, Telegram groups, and interior design platforms like Qanvast and Renonation.sg for a more comprehensive understanding of the interior design firm you are considering.

It’s important to not only focus on reading the positive reviews. Take the time to also go through the negative ones and determine if the criticisms are valid. Additionally, pay attention to the best reviews and look for any repetitive language or phrases. Not all positive reviews are suspicious, but it’s a good idea to stay cautious and double-check any references mentioned. It’s also worth noting how the company responds to the reviews, if they address them at all. This will give you valuable insights into their attitude and level of customer care.

4. The interior design firm’s transparency

Many homeowners overlook the importance of considering how open and transparent an interior design firm is when it comes to discussing costs and timelines for their renovation. Do they provide clear and upfront information right from the beginning, or do they try to hide certain expenses and details, leaving you with vague promises or a generic quotation that doesn’t include all the necessary items or have detailed breakdowns?

This is a crucial factor because it could lead to unexpected “hidden costs” down the line or the possibility of your home not being ready on time. While it’s true that there can be unforeseen expenses and issues that arise during the renovation process, sometimes beyond the control of the interior design firm (like the recent pandemic), it’s necessary that these are communicated to you as a homeowner as soon as possible so you can have a clear understanding of what to expect.

At Yang’s Inspiration Design, we pride ourselves on our clear and open communication, offering transparent pricing without any hidden costs.

5. The interior designer’s rapport with you

While you’re selecting an interior design firm, it’s important to also see if you are able to connect with the interior designer assigned to you. After all, you’ll essentially be working closely with the designer themselves. Can they truly understand your ideas and desires during your discussions? Or do they merely push their own preferences onto you? The ideal designer should offer guidance and suggestions while still incorporating your personal style and taste.

Our team of interior designers here always prioritises our homeowners’ vision and preferences. Building trust and fostering a strong connection with our clients is something we value. And we also take extra pride in our commitment to follow up with our homeowners even after the project is complete, just to see if they’ve settled in nicely.

Choosing an interior design firm in Singapore may seem overwhelming, but by considering the above factors and conducting thorough research, you can make an informed decision that will result in a dream home that meets your needs and exceeds your expectations. So take your time, do your homework, and find the perfect interior design firm for your own home.
